A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for parts of Fiji

A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for the interior and southern parts of Viti Levu and the southern parts of Vanua Levu.

The interior and southern parts of Viti Levu include Sigatoka through the Coral Coast to Navua, while the southern parts of Vanua Levu include southern Bua and Cakaudrove.

The Fiji Meteorological Service warned that a northerly wind flow is affecting the country, creating unstable weather conditions.

“Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected, bringing heavy rainfall over the warned areas,” the Nadi Weather Office said.

“Severe thunderstorms may produce intense rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas over the next few hours.”

The public is advised to keep clear of flooded creeks and drains, avoid walking, cycling or driving through floodwaters, and unplug computers and electrical appliances.

The Fiji Meteorological Service also advised the public to stay indoors, away from windows, keep children inside, remain vigilant and closely monitor weather conditions.

“Thunderstorm activity and associated heavy rainfall are expected to continue until late afternoon or evening,” the service said.

“Please stay informed through official Fiji Meteorological Service updates.”
