The need to earn an income  prompted Venina Sandy to join 22 other students in a sewing course at the Makoi Women Vocational Training Centre

Joining the centre was a way out of the financial constraints Ms Sandy faced on a daily basis.

The mother of two children said despite the challenges she met, she strived to help her husband.

“Raising my children within an extended family is a challenge in my daily life. My husband is a full time farmer and a part time hotel worker with not much income. Life is hard for us and sometimes I cannot cope,” Ms Sandy said.

“The hardship I face everyday made me wonder what tomorrow will bring and prayed for God to show me the way.

“Before I leave home, I make sure that all my chores are done. Joining this school made me realise the importance of family and spending time with them.

“I met new friends at the centre and learned many things which motivated me to become better.”

Chief guest, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, encouraged the 50 graduates to continue on the path of determination and hard work.

“I never get tired of saying that when women earn, it benefits the whole family as they evidently reinvest most of their earnings in their families,” Ms Akbar said.

“The impact of the work of this centre does not stop at the individual women graduating from here, but rather the lives of everyone attached to her.

“This fact alone establishes the greatness in the vision and goals of this institute.

“I must also thank families of the women who have been through this institution and those of the women graduating today.

“Their support is invaluable for anyone’s growth and by being that support system you encourage these women to break barriers, to bring about positive changes in their own lives and to contribute towards the welfare of their families even better. Collective effort is powerful.”
