A sex worker who revealed in a documentary about the prevalence of methamphetamine and its abuse in Fiji claims that her life is now in danger.

Elaine, is a transgender sex worker who has been off the drug, also known as ice, for 10 months now.

The 22-year-old claims that she and her family have received death threats. She opened up about her drug use in an interview with an Australian TV channel, SBS Dateline, which became viral.

Elaine is working with Opposition Member of Parliament Lynda Tabuya to contact the Police.

Her story

On Thursday, two vehicles full of men came to Elaine’s brother’s home in Nadi.

They were threatened and told that if they contacted the Police, there would be more visits.

Elaine said her family was scared and had not called the Police since. However, she has not held back.

“I don’t like to live in fear, and I want to tell these people that I am not scared. I hope that by coming to the media and letting people know would hopefully get some support from the community,” Elaine said.

“I know that now if they come close to my family they will be exposing themselves. After the documentary went viral, my life is in danger. I have been threatened, my family has been threatened and I am here seeking the support of the public.

“Uncovering the ice problem in Fiji is the most dangerous cause anyone can take up. What I have done is only scraping the tip of an iceberg.”

Elaine claimed many people are involved in the meth industry in Fiji. She claimed there were different levels of manufacturers and distribution.

The sex worker said her coming out about her habit had made her a huge threat to the people involved in the drug industry.

Elaine started using the drugs when she was 17 years old and at that age she became a sex worker on the streets of Suva. She also took her services to Nadi.

She said she became so engrossed in the industry that one time she became a test dummy for the so-called drug suppliers. She said she would be given new batches to try.

Elaine said the drug industry here was thriving as methamphetamine and cocaine were now readily available in Fiji.

“I know that minors are using it and if their drug addiction was like mine then they would have left school,” she said.

Elaine has since quit the habit and said her spiritual belief was making her strong. She said she needed the help of the community.

She said she was aware that there were people out there fighting this drug.

Elaine has reported the matter to Police.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed receiving a report at the Totogo Police Station. The case was referred to Nadi because the threat was allegedly made to a family member there.
