Bad weather condition has forced shipping companies to change their schedules over the next few days.

This follows forecasts by the Fiji Meteorological Services that severe Tropical Cyclone Gita was expected to pass south of Ono-i- Lau as a category four system tonight.

Storm surges are expected to accompany damaging gale force winds.

South Island Shipping director Ulaiasi Buivatu said MV Liahona trip was scheduled to leave

Mua-i- walu jetty today has been cancelled due to adverse weather condition.

“Weather updates from Meteorological Office in Nadi, has forced us to cancel our trip to Ono-i- Lau for today and tomorrow,” Mr Buivatu said.

“Passengers will be updated once we have received the green light from the meteorological office,” he said.

The interisland vessel was scheduled to sail for Ono-i- Lau and Kadavu today.

Patterson Shipping Service general manager David Patterson said as Tropical Gita was expected to pass South Ono-i- Lau as a category four system cyclone, trips for tomorrow (Wednesday 14 February)  have been

cancelled.

“Trips from Labasa-Suva- Labasa is cancelled due to the weather system the country was experiencing,” Mr Patterson said.

“Victoria Marine resource manager Akuila Kaci said MV Brianna will dry dock at Draunibota, Lami.

Most vessels in the Suva Harbor are now positioned away from the docks for safety and that includes Navy patrol boats.
