Fiji is facing a shortage of taxi drivers.

Fiji Taxi Association (FTA) general secretary, Ashwin Lal said this was not an isolated case.

“The taxi industry is not the only one facing this,” Mr Lal said.

“The bus industry is facing the same issue. The shortage is a serious matter that is not often known or acknowledged.”

He said the shortage occurred because of taxi drivers migrating overseas and seeking greener pastures for their families.”

“This is out of the association’s control. What is happening is that people are leaving our country and going to other countries for the higher incomes.

“They leave the country so they can earn an income that is higher than what they earn here.

“We can’t just force anyone to stay in Fiji.”

Meanwhile, the association looks after more than 6000 registered drivers and operators.
