Single mother Ema Tagi Druavesi donned her graduation gown and cap, defying all odds during The University of the South Pacific’s graduation at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.

It was a heartwarming display of grit and determination.

With her Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Management firmly in hand, Ms Druavesi’s inspiring journey stands as a testament to human perseverance and the spirit of a mother’s love.

It was a moment she had longed for, one that involved countless late-night study sessions, juggling motherhood with academics and battling life’s adversities head-on.

“Today is an emotional day for me, reason being is that I have my daughter here with me,” she said.

Life threw numerous hurdles in Ms Druavesi’s path, but she was determined to surmount them all.

“It’s important that I have to be by my daughter’s side most of the time because she is just eight months,” she said.

“But that did not stop me from trying to achieve my goal and today it finally pays off.”

Ms Druavesi expressed gratitude to her parents, three brothers and her extended family for their unwavering support throughout her journey.

“Being a single parent had its fair share of challenges, but without the support from my parents and siblings, I would not be able to see this day,” she said.

The USP graduate offered words of encouragement to others who may be facing similar challenges.

“If you have a dream, actually go and chase it, do not let anything stop you from getting to your dream,” she said.

Her message to single mothers resonated with a resounding message of empowerment: “Do not be embarrassed and discouraged; your child will be the reason for you to keep pushing through each day and each challenge. It will only be your child who sees the work that you do for them, and in the future, they will be the one to support you.”

She said her journey was a story of resilience, proving that even in the face of adversity, dreams were attainable through unwavering determination and the support of loved ones.
