Six new ambulances were commissioned at the National Fire Authority headquarters in Walu Bay, Suva, today to strengthen emergency medical response services across Fiji.

Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa said the $1.12 million investment reflected the coalition Government’s commitment to improving emergency services and response times.

“These are important investments that aim to improve emergency medical responses for people across Fiji,” Mr Nalumisa said.

The new ambulances come as demand for emergency services continues to grow, with the National Fire Authority previously operating only nine ambulances nationwide.

Mr Nalumisa said that in 2025, the authority received 576 emergency calls but was able to respond to only 185, leaving 391 unattended due to limited resources.

He said the additional ambulances would ease pressure on frontline responders and improve access to urgent medical care.

Mr Nalumisa said emergencies in Fiji were becoming increasingly complex, with incidents such as fires and road accidents requiring both firefighting and immediate medical assistance.

He said the establishment of the National Fire Authority’s paramedic department in December 2024 was a major step in strengthening the country’s emergency response capability.

The department now provides specialised medical care during emergencies, including attending 56 serious road accident incidents last year.

Mr Nalumisa acknowledged the challenges faced by firefighters and paramedics and commended their dedication.

“These ambulances play a crucial role in supporting paramedics during medical emergencies, road accident rescues and fire incidents,” he said.

The commissioning is part of ongoing efforts to equip emergency services with the tools, training and infrastructure needed to respond effectively and save lives.

Mr Nalumisa reaffirmed Government’s commitment to continue supporting the National Fire Authority.
