Tony Chan, 24, believes support and encouragement from people play a big part in any achievement.

He scooped five medals during the 2024 University of Fiji Graduation at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka on Friday.

The medical student was capped as the UniFiji Outstanding Student in Internal Medicine, Outstanding Student in Paediatrics, and Outstanding Student in Community Health and Family Service.

He was one of the two students who received a gold medal award for 2024, and the Vice-Chancellor Award.

The former Jai Narayan College student in Suva said the challenge he faced was being away from his family during the COVID pandemic.

“I thank my family, my schoolmates and my lecturers, especially Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete. Their words of encouragement and support played a big part in my achievement. My schoolmates were the ones who stood by me through these six years,” he said.

He was surprised to receive more than one award.

“I believe it was determination that my educators saw in me. This is all goes back to my two main mentors at home, my parents.”

He said the medals and certificates opened unlimited doors of opportunities into the medical world.
