The Fijian government is considering new legislation to restrict access to social media platforms for children under the age of 16, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica.
Mr Kamikamica said the proposed move is aimed at protecting young people from the negative impacts of social media, including cyberbullying, online exploitation, and mental health issues.
"We are exploring options to introduce age restrictions that would limit social media access for those under 16," Mr Kamikamica said.

The government plans to collaborate closely with the Australian government to develop and potentially enforce the new law, drawing on Australia's experience in online safety legislation.
While details of the proposed legislation have not yet been finalised, Mr Kamikamica said the initiative is part of a broader effort to create a safer online environment for Fijian youth.
