The position of general secretary for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) will officially become vacant at the end of this month, the party has confirmed.

In a statement issued yesterday, SODELPA announced that expressions of interest are now being invited from eligible and committed individuals to fill this key administrative and political role.

The vacancy was noted in the party president’s monthly report to the working committee and comes amid growing internal pressure on current general secretary Viliame Takayawa, following a controversial social media post that drew criticism from members of the ruling coalition Government.

Party leader Aseri Radrodro had earlier confirmed that the party was expected to convene a management board meeting soon to address backlash surrounding Mr Takayawa.

This comes after Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka publicly hinted that SODELPA’s position in the coalition could be reconsidered if the party fails to manage internal discipline.

Despite no official link being made between the Facebook controversy and the vacancy, the timing has raised eyebrows within political circles.

SODELPA has announced that it was seeking a candidate who would serve as the party’s administrative head and spokesperson, manage national campaign strategies, oversee party operations, and act as the Registered Officer under Decree 4 of 2013.

The successful candidate, according to the party’s statement, must have the party’s best interest at heart and be willing to commit fully to the fulfilment of the general secretary’s responsibilities, including the ability to work voluntarily in some aspects of the role.

Applications close May 29, 2025.

The new general secretary’s emoluments and working conditions would be determined by the SODELPA management board in line with the party Constitution.
