A solar streetlight initiative funded through a government grant is expected to improve safety, mobility and community participation at the Kalekana Settlement in Lami.

Settlement headman Taniela Lui said the assistance helped community members progress its plan to install solar power lighting along dark and unsafe pathways in their area.

He said the project was important for elderly residents, persons with disabilities, the sick and the visually impaired, who often struggled to move around at night.

“We are thankful to Government for the services provided for us,” Mr Lui said, adding that the lights would make it easier for residents to attend village, clan and family meetings without difficulties.

He added parts of the settlement did not have sufficient lights, particularly crosscuts leading to the main road, creating challenges and safety concerns for residents moving at night.

Mr Lui acknowledged that social issues such as drug-related activity and other illegal behaviour occur in some dark areas of the settlement and said the installation of lighting would help reduce such problems by making public spaces safer and more visible.

“Our aim is to install solar streetlights so people can walk safely at night and discourage youths from gathering in dark areas where negative activities happen,” he said.

Mr Lui also emphasised the importance of strong communication between community leaders and government offices, saying access to services depends on maintaining proper links with local authorities and advisory structures.
