Soroptimist International celebrated 100 years of aiding women and girls around the world.

The organisation’s Southwest Pacific president, Suman Lal, launched the centennial banner with Sigatoka club members considering the milestone achievement.

The occasion was celebrated globally in the 127 countries by the organisation’s 75,000 members of 3000 clubs.

There are eight clubs in Fiji.

Ms Lal said Soroptimist International (SI) Fiji had been part of the organisation for 50 years now and was one of the three countries with Australia and New Zealand to form the Southwest Pacific Federation.

“Soroptimists have improved the lives of women and girls through programmes leading to social and economic empowerment,” she said.

“We have reached a milestone, and this speaks for itself, and we have plans to last many more centuries. The pride of being a Soroptimist is prestige which every member has close to their heart.”

She said members would continue to advocate for ensuring that every woman and girl had access to food, clean drinking water and health.

“We work and leave no one behind,” Ms Lal said.

“I personally want to reach out to the indigenous and maritime community to encourage, empower and enable them in all works of life.

“The vulnerability lies within these remote areas and untouchables where capacity building is highly recommended.”
