In his address, the A-G said that despite another person’s religion or race, it was vital that everyone was treated fairly.
“I would like to say to all those children that are becoming prefects, the most important thing that you can do as prefects is to always speak the truth,” he said.
“You have been given a particular level of responsibility, you have also been asked to look after the students in the classes and also the school overall.
“It is very important that you always speak the truth, treat everybody alike, treat everybody fairly, even though they may be related to you or may live in the same area, you may go to the same church, temple or mosque, you will always have to make sure that you always treat everybody equally.”
He said this was also how the country could grow further.
“Overall, that is how we can actually progress as a nation because if we are able to see everybody alike, if we do not make the distinction between each other based on divisions such as ethnicity or religion or province or schools we went to, we would have a much better country and in fact we would be much more stronger as a country,” he added.
“It is critically important that as a community we are able to support each other.”
The A-G also encouraged the parents of the student leaders to support them as they learn their roles of leadership.
The school’s head girl, Katarina Tupua, 13, from Nasivi in Vatukoula said she looked forward to working with the teachers and students this year.
