The abuse of kava consumption in Kadavu is a serious concern.
Calling out men to control their consumption, Bulou Luisa Duikete, who leads the Kadavu women’s Association, revealed how its consumption was breaking up families.
“The reality is most men back in the village tends to neglect their families for a bowl of kava,” Ms Duikete said.

“This has led to financial strain within families, especially if funds are redirected from essential needs and cost of living.”
Ms Duikete said it had resulted in many women back in the island playing both roles – looking after their families and searching for food.
In response, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka urged village headmen to step up in their roles.
“It’s not our job alone as government to step in and assist every villager, we need your support,” Mr Rabuka said.
“Communal effort is needed, we need to keep our future and identity intact.
“As the village headman, you are entrusted with ensuring the wellbeing and development of your community,” he said.
“This includes overseeing local governance, resolving disputes, and coordinating with authorities for essential services.”
He reminded those in attendance that being a village headman was not just a title but a responsibility to improve the lives of those under their care.
