The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has issued a stern reminder that forcing or encouraging children to beg is illegal under Fijian law.

Highlighting the dangers of child begging, the ministry said such practices expose children to exploitation, abuse, and harm while depriving them of a safe and nurturing environment.

Minister Sashi Kiran stressed the legal responsibility of parents and guardians to prioritise their children's welfare and safety.

"Encouraging or forcing children to beg violates their rights and contravenes national laws designed to protect them," said Ms Kiran.

"Those facilitating this unlawful practice will face legal consequences."

The ministry, in collaboration with law enforcement, has pledged to prosecute offenders to safeguard children's wellbeing.

The public is urged to report any instances of child begging to authorities by contacting the Child Helpline on 1325.

"Together, let us create a safer and more compassionate society where all children can enjoy a joyful and secure holiday season," added Ms Kiran.

As the year begins, the ministry is calling on stakeholders and communities to work towards making our country a safer place for families and children, wishing everyone a blessed New Year filled with kindness and goodwill.
