A Year 12 student of Jai Narayan College wants to see major constitutional reforms, highlighting five key areas she believes should be considered in proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution.

Deputy head girl Hefrani Matavou made her submission yesterday during public consultations on Fiji’s constitutional review process.

She called for the recognition of Christian values and principles, amendments to the Bill of Rights, recognition of the Great Council of Chiefs, stronger measures against coup culture, and changes to Fiji’s electoral system.

Hefrani said the Constitution should recognise the roles, values and principles that help shape society while ensuring unity among all Fijians.

She called for a review of the Bill of Rights, particularly provisions relating to education and children’s rights.

“Free education should be reconsidered to create long-term benefits for students, including through greater support for scholarships and future opportunities,” she said.

On children’s rights, Hefrani said constitutional protections should work alongside parental responsibilities, stressing the importance of guidance, discipline and support within families.

“The Great Council of Chiefs bring leaders together during times of national challenges,” she said.

She also called for stronger constitutional safeguards to prevent coups, saying Fiji must avoid repeating past political instability and ensure those responsible face consequences under the law.

Hefrani said Fiji’s electoral system should also be reviewed to encourage responsible participation, national unity and stronger democratic representation.

Her submission was part of public consultations on Fiji’s constitutional review process.
