Students back Constitution lessons in schools
Students say learning about the Constitution would help create more informed and responsible citizens.

Calls are growing in Taveuni for the 2013 Constitution to be amended and included in the school curriculum, with villagers and students arguing young people must better understand their democratic rights and the laws governing the country.
Speaking during the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) consultation in Somosomo Village, resident Suliano Batirerega said constitutional education should begin at an early age.
“The Constitution should be taught in schools so students are well versed with the laws and understand their democratic rights,” Mr Batirerega said.

The consultation also drew support from students of Bucalevu Secondary School, many of whom said constitutional education would help develop more informed and responsible citizens.
Student Ofa Atu said teaching the Constitution in classrooms would have long-term benefits for young people across Fiji.
“This idea will benefit us because students need to know their rights and responsibilities,” Ofa said.
Community members at the consultation said understanding the Constitution was essential to strengthening democracy and encouraging young people to actively participate in national discussions and decision-making.
The CRC continues nationwide consultations as Fijians share their views on the future of the country’s supreme law.
