Two students of Rampur College narrowly escaped serious injury after falling into a septic tank when its concrete cover collapsed during recess on February 6.
Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Agni Deo Singh said a National Occupational Health and Safety Service (NOHSS) investigation found the students had stepped onto the septic tank cover while using a shortcut between the washroom and the canteen.
The area had been designated out of bounds by the school.
“The septic tank cover unexpectedly collapsed, causing both students to fall into the opening,” Mr Singh said, adding that another student quickly assisted them out and they did not sustain injuries.
Investigations confirmed the school had marked restricted areas and displayed layout maps identifying off-limit zones.
However, officials raised concerns about the structural integrity of the septic tank cover, describing it as a significant safety risk.
NOHSS has issued an Improvement Notice directing the school to barricade the area immediately and complete repairs by February 20.
A Requisition Notice was also served requesting the school’s occupational health and safety policy, internal investigation report and site layout of restricted zones.
Mr Singh said the incident highlighted the need for stronger infrastructure maintenance and safety compliance within school compounds.
“Safety within school premises is a shared responsibility. Schools must ensure infrastructure is properly maintained and hazardous areas are adequately secured, while students must also follow established safety rules,” he said.
Authorities have recommended clearer warning signage, reinforcement of approved student pathways during breaks and increased staff supervision in less visible areas. The ministry said it would continue working with the Ministry of Education and school OHS committees to strengthen safety standards across schools.
