Saint Mary’s Primary School in Labasa has taken the lead role to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Head teacher Sunil Dutt said the school was doing this to inform the students of the importance of washing hands and brushing their teeth.

Mr Dutt has informed his teachers to spend five minutes every morning to talk to students about the importance of handwashing and the pandemic spread of COVID-19, to be in line with what the Government was trying to do.

“We want to be proactive and get the students used to that hand washing habit,” Mr Dutt said.

“We have been having this washing hand drills in schools and we’re going to place more emphasis on that.

“Staff of Colgate-Palmolive gave posters that have been pasted in classrooms and around the school near the tap areas,” he said.

Year Eight student Shahzaib Aziz said students were eager to wash their hands regularly.

He thanked Colgate- Palmolive and the nurses from the Labasa Hospital for teaching them how to wash hands and brush teeth properly.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, in an earlier statement, had pointed out the single most important thing anyone could do was to wash their hands with soap and water on a regular basis.

Mr Bainimarama stated that the combination of soap and water would help kill the COVID-19 in its tracks.

He has asked every Fijian to help him carry that message to every man, woman and child in the country.

“A thorough and effective hand washing takes 20 seconds and with this simple act, you may very well be saving a life,” he said.

“We’ll also need to break the habit of shaking hands, hugging and sharing takis and bilos. Instead, simply share a “bula” from a safe distance and limit in-person contact as much as possible,” he said.
