The Suva City Council (SCC) has approved a five per cent salary increase for all its staff members. The pay increase came after some consultations between the council members, the special administrator and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
SCC special administrator chairperson and acting chief executive officer, Tevita Boseiwaqa, said since his tenure, he had seen how hard the workers have been in ensuring that Suva city was kept clean. He said this needed to be acknowledged as they were the ones that got the job done.
“A thorough consultation was carried out with everyone especially the union and staff and heads of departments before we took this bold step,” Mr Boseiwaqa said. “The pay increase is made across the board for both established and unestablished workers and this is among four benefits that the SCC is giving away.

Mr Boseiwaqa said the first payout of two per cent was given out on Tuesday, the last day of 2024 and next week. The second payout of one per cent will be made on January 28 while the other two per cent will be paid out before April 17.
Mr Boseiwaqa acknowledged municipal workers who spent most of their time away from home. He said the pay increase was SCC’s way of contributing to the workers’ balancing their work and family.
Regularising acting positions
As of December 31, 2024, the SCC has regularised all acting positions held within the council. This is especially for those who have held the position for more than six months.
Mr Boseiwaqa said the regularisation was in line with an important key in its strategies, to create a healthy environment and leadership.
“All positions below CEO level will no longer be contracted but will be on tenureship,” he said. “However, an assessment will be carried out to monitor their progress throughout.”
