The Suva City Council will install an additional 20 CCTV cameras along the streets of the capital city.
This installation of more CCTV cameras will assist authorities monitor criminal activities and identify suspects.
Local Government Minister Premila Kumar told Parliament yesterday that it was more of a technology-driven programme to support the fight against crime, including drugs.
Mrs Kumar said the council was working with the Fiji Police Force and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
She said there was no way a municipality could put CCTV cameras anywhere in the business premises because the premises were owned by an individual.
“What we can do is put it out in public places, outside, streets to capture that,” she said.
“That is precisely what we are doing and monitoring business licence. For example, in Lautoka Municipal Market the juice sellers are selling cigarettes and drugs.
