Suva will be glimmering at night with Diwali now a week away.

Suva City Council (SCC) contractors ran power cables and set up lights on trees as part of the Diwali decorations for the city.

Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua said they were doing this because it was a tradition to brighten up the city.

He said this was also to celebrate with the people of Suva and pass on the Diwali spirit.

“We are hoping to brighten up the city and with this gesture promote the morals of Diwali, which signifies the victory of good over evil and light over darkness,” he said.

“As a municipal council, we are doing our best to serve ratepayers and citizens of Suva. In return we ask people to have civic pride.

“A simple task of putting rubbish in the bin will go a long way.”

Mr Tikoduadua said the council spent a hefty amount of money on cleaning litter. He said this money could be used for capital works and improvements.

He said he hoped people embraced the true spirit of Diwali.

He said Fijians have stood together and faced a national pandemic and this Diwali he hoped Fijians make it their duty to show civic pride.

The SCC will also have a major clean up of the city next week. And if you are driving through the city at night, make sure to catch a glimpse of the Diwali decorations put up by the council.
