Lorima Tabaiwalu of Nasikawa Vision College wanted to better his jump at the  Nadroga/Navosa Athletics Zone meet at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.

Little he did not know that he will set a new record in his favourite field event - high jump.

The Votua, Nadroga native jumped 1.80metres surpassing the old record of 1.67m set by Isoa Rounds.

A total of 16 zone records were broken on day one.

The Year 12 student was looking forward to bettering his medal chance at the Coca-Cola Games next month.

“I was not too sure of breaking the record as I was preparing for a better outing at the Cokes,” he said.

“I won bronze in 2019 so I want to better my performance.

“I will also take part in the 100m and 200m respectively.”

His rival for the last three years Iliesa Turuva of Sigatoka Andra Sangam College again settled for a silver medal.

“This has been the story for the last three years,” Turuva said.

Furthermore,, an ankle injury has hampered the performance of Joana Waticomoya who settled for the silver medal with a leap of 4.41m in the girl’s intermediate long jump event.

The Kumi, Tailevu native is the holder of the national sub-junior girls long jump record of 5.07m set in 2019.

Vani Divasu of Sigatoka Andra Sangam College won a gold medal with a leap of 4.48m in her first jump.

Senior education officer Sigatoka Setareki Rika, who officiated at the event, thanked the head of schools, parents and stakeholders.

“The target this year is one gold better and this can only be achieved by working together,” he said.

When this edition went to press yesterday, Sigatoka Methodist College led the medal tally in the boys’ and girls’ divisions.
