Tabuya promotes Nature-Based Solutions

“In this context, revitalising mangrove forests in Fiji is a prime example of community-led coastal protection and nature’s resilience. These crucial ecosystems are being restored mostly by women and elderly, using traditional knowledge,” she said.

Minister for Women Lynda Tabuya says, in the face of the climate crisis, nature-based solutions (NbS) emerge not just as strategies, but as bonfires of hope for vulnerable communities.

She said NbS represented a comprehensive approach that utilised the natural capabilities of the environment to tackle both climate change and biodiversity decline in tandem.

It serves as an important link, matching what our communities need with what our planet needs, she added.

“In this context, revitalising mangrove forests in Fiji is a prime example of community-led coastal protection and nature’s resilience. These crucial ecosystems are being restored mostly by women and elderly, using traditional knowledge,” she said.

“Drawing on our deep ecological heritage, they provide a pathway towards balance, aligning the well-being of our communities with the health of the environment we depend on.

“Fiji’s NbS approach to seawalls also displays a harmonious blend of traditional ecological practices and modern climate adaptation strategies, establishing a model for environmentally sustainable coastal defence. These innovative seawalls incorporate four natural elements: mangrove hedges, boulders, soapstone and clay soil, and vetiver grass.”
