A six-year-old boy was rushed to Suva’s Colonial War Memorial Hospital yesterday after being hit by a vehicle near his home in Waisasa Settlement, Tacirua, soon after school.

He is a Year One student at Tacirua Primary School and was walking home when the incident occurred.

An eyewitness reported that the boy was struck by a car attempting to overtake the bus from which he had just disembarked.

The incident happened as the boy was crossing the road a few metres ahead of the parked bus.

“Everything happened so fast. We saw the child walking out of the bus and passing by our shop,” the witness said.

“Suddenly, he was lying on the other side of the road with injuries on his head. The vehicle that hit him appeared to be trying to pass the bus at high speed. We heard screeching tires.”

“The vehicle hit him on the shoulder, and I believe his head struck the pavement,” the witness added.

Two Police officers who were nearby responded immediately. The boy’s mother, Buna Ikanivere, said she was informed of the incident by other children.

“A driver from the settlement offered to help me take my son to the hospital,” she said.

She mentioned that her son was first taken to Valelevu Health Centre and later transferred to the CWM Hospital for further treatment.

Questions sent to the Fiji Police Force last night remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
