The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs will reassign its former permanent secretary, Pita Tagicakirewa, to a new role following his return from medical leave, confirmed Public Service Commission (PSC) chairperson Luke Rokovada.

Mr Tagicakirewa, who has held the post since November 2021, went on medical leave earlier this year.

A media statement issued by the ministry on April 13, 2025, announced the appointment of Jone Navakamocea as the acting permanent secretary, effective March 31, 2025.

“This change comes as the former permanent secretary is currently on medical leave and will also take his outstanding leave entitlement upon completion of his medical leave,” the statement said.

Mr Rokovada told this masthead that the commission will formally communicate the reassignment to Mr Tagicakirewa upon his expected return to duty on June 23.

Mr Tagicakirewa, a career civil servant with decades of experience in public administration and indigenous affairs, said he was ready to serve in whatever capacity the PSC deems appropriate.

“I will accept any role the commission assigns me,” he said yesterday.

His tenure as permanent secretary has included key initiatives aimed at strengthening iTaukei institutions, cultural preservation, and village-level governance structures. He has also been instrumental in supporting policy reforms concerning land administration and traditional leadership protocols.

The acting permanent secretary, Mr Navakamocea, brought in significant public service experience of his own, having previously served in senior roles across various ministries, including Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office.

The ministry is expected to announce Mr Tagicakirewa’s new portfolio in due course.
