Communications specialist Wati Talebula graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Policy today from the Fiji National University, marking another milestone in her academic journey.

Ms Talebula, a former journalist with the Fiji Sun, said her success was made possible through the support of her family and loved ones.

“My parents, my daughter, have been my strength throughout,” she said.

She said returning to study was not an easy decision, but she pushed through the challenges.

Ms Talebula dedicated her achievement to her late best friend, former Fiji Sun journalist Jone Mary Salusalu, who passed away in February.

“I lost him early this February, and I know if he was here he would be shouting the loudest,” she said.

She said she had wished he was present to witness her graduation.

Ms Talebula admitted there were moments she wanted to give up, but said she kept going by reflecting on how far she had come.

“The journey I’ve been through has been an emotional roller-coaster, but it has built me into who I am today,” she said.

She is the first person in her family to graduate.

Ms Talebula previously completed her bachelor’s degree in India.

She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Social Policy and plans to continue to a PhD.

“I’m also looking forward to doing my PhD since I’m currently doing my Master’s,” she said.

She encouraged others to take the first step in their education journey.

“Never give up. Never look down on yourself. Sometimes it’s hard to start, but take the first step. I’d like to encourage everyone to just start,” she said.
