The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) hosted Fiji’s High Commissioner to India, Jagannath Sami at its headquarters in Lautoka last Friday.

Mr Sami expressed his deep personal connection to Fiji’s sugar industry and commitment to support sugarcane farmers after having served the industry for more than four decades.

He conveyed great enthusiasm about the opportunity to enhance SRIF’s research capabilities through cooperation with India.

They discussed strengthening research collaboration and partnership between the SRIF and Indian institutions.

SRIF chief executive officer Vinesh Kumar highlighted several key areas of potential partnership such as specialised training programmes for SRIF’s researchers and scientists in India, introducing improved technologies to advance research efforts and modernising the sugar industry and assisting developing frameworks for field and factory auditing processes.

“I am appreciative of Dr Kumar’s leadership in SRIF, noting that his agricultural background provides an important vision for guiding the institute toward broader positive impacts,” Mr Sami said.

Mr Kumar said SRIF looks forward to continued dialogue with the Fiji High Commission in India to identify mutually beneficial collaboration opportunities.

“Strengthening research and sharing knowledge between Fiji and India will be invaluable for the sustainable growth of our crucial sugar sector,” Mr Kumar said.
