Tamavua Chief Promises To Serve His People Fairly

I will serve, love and treat you all equally, whether you support my leadership or not.

This was the promise made to his people by the Turaga Na Rokotuicolo, Ratu Apenisa Ka­lokalo Sere Loki.

Ratu Apenisa was formally installed yesterday as the Turaga Na Rokotuicolo after holding the title for 33 years, since his father passed away in 1987.

Hundreds gathered to witness the traditional event which began with a church service at 11am followed by traditional protocols at the Tamavua Village grounds.

Chiefly Matanikutu tribe spokesperson, Peni Nabukelevu, said: “This is his formal installa­tion as per the requirement of the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs.”

He said there were disputes and differences among family members on the chiefly position however, on Thursday all the eight clan leaders (mataqali) met at the village hall to solve the disputes.

Ratu Apenisa questioned the leaders if they had all supported his appointment. All of them did, says Mr Nabukelevu.

Ratu Apenisa has nine siblings and is married to Vasiti Loki.

They have four children.
