The Lau Provincial Council has launched a taskforce to address the rising cases of HIV and drug use in the province.

Speaking at the council’s urgent meeting at the Yatu Lau Conference Room in Suva, Roko Tui Lau Jioji Kalounivalu said the taskforce was formed following concerns that drugs were being brought in by yachts visiting Lau waters.

“The yachts that are coming into our waters are bringing in drugs, and our youths are taking them, which is affecting them,” Mr Kalounivalu said.
“There are also concerns about tourists coming around Lau, as they might be bringing in drugs or other related issues.”

He said the Tui Nayau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, had confirmed with the Ministry of Health that HIV and AIDS cases exist in Lau.

“That’s why he’s taking the issue seriously — because we are a small group of islands, and if the virus spreads, it will affect everyone quickly. We want to mitigate the problem while it’s still manageable,” Mr Kalounivalu said.

The taskforce will include representatives from the 13 districts, as well as youth and women’s group members.

Advisor to the Tui Nayau, Nacanieli Yalimaiwai, said the taskforce would work closely with the Police, Health Ministry, and other stakeholders to gather data and develop community programmes.

“A number of pastors from Christian denominations who are Lauans have been doing a great job raising awareness,” Mr Yalimaiwai said.

The taskforce was initially established during the provincial council meeting earlier this year.
