Tavatuilagi Triumphs Over Depression To Earn Degree

Having to deal with depression was a hard hurdle to face for Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific on Friday, Mr Tavatuilagi said attaining a degree was a long-held aspiration.

A decade ago, Mr Tavatuilagi’s dream of becoming a lawyer did not materialise.

However, he redirected his focus and pursued a new path, aiming to become a bank officer and join the USP alumni.

He has now achieved this long-awaited goal. Mr Tavatuilagi said developing his mindset to see the good in every situation was a starting point for him.

“I associated myself more with quality people, and finding the right support network,” Mr Tavatuilagi said.

“With the right attitude and strong support system from my family was the crucial part of my journey.

“I was determined to get out of shackles of depression. I challenged myself to be see things differently and be positive.”

Originally from Nabouciwa, Nakelo, in Tailevu, he shares maternal links to Nasaqalau, Lakeba, Lau, The 33-year-old stands firm with his decisions in trying to be the best version of himself when given the right opportunity.

He said depression was one of the biggest giants he had to endure in trying to get his degree.

“It’s all to pass with the peers who had a lot of faith in me, they encouraged me to keep pushing despite the struggles and failures I had gone through,” he said.

“But God was right at the center of it all, I’m just grateful for the gift of family and friendship.”
