Elders and villagers of Naselesele and Wainikeli have requested to have a Resident Magistrate at the Taveuni Magistrate’s Court.

This was raised during a talanoa session with Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, at Naselesele Village on Friday.

Mr Rabuka said the request could be a sign of increase in criminal activities on Taveuni.

He said they would discuss the request with the Ministry of Justice.

At present, Mr Rabuka said there had been Magistrates visiting Taveuni to conduct trials.

However, some members of the Yavusa of Wainikeli believed a Resident Magistrate should be based on Taveuni.

This is to allow cases to be heard instead of referring to Savusavu or Labasa Magistrate Courts.
