Taveuni Man, 19, Fronts Court For Arson Charge

It is alleged that McComber tried to burn the Macuata Muslim League building, burned Ali’s Fashion Shop, and stole items worth more than $5,000 from Courts Fijj Taveuni.

A 19-year old man from Naqara, Taveuni, has been charged for his alleged involvement in a case of attempted arson on Taveuni Island in July.

Sitiveni McComber appeared at the Magistrates Court in Taveuni yesterday charged with one count each of attempted arson, arson, and burglary.

It is alleged that McComber tried to burn the Macuata Muslim League building, burned Ali’s Fashion Shop, and stole items worth more than $5,000 from Courts Fijj Taveuni.

Investigators have made recoveries of more than $4000 woth of items believed to have been stolen.

McComber has been remanded in custody by the Court at the Labasa Corrections facility.

The matter has been transferred to the High Court in Labasa and will be called for mention on September 23.

A second suspect a 25-year old man was arrested on Wednesday and is in custody.
