Jubilant students of Tavua District Secondary School created their piece of history by taking home the 14th Fijian Made Film Award title that was presented at the Vmax Damodar Cinema on Friday night.
It was their third year in the annual Kula Film Award competition and there was no looking back as students and teachers from the small mining town of Tavua hit top honours in big screen production.
One of the teachers in charge, Asenaca Rawaqa, said she could not be more proud of her students’ hard work because it had finally paid off.

“To be nominated was the talk of the town and now that we have won the Best Film Award it is such a joy and a humbling experience for everyone involved,” Ms Rawaqa said.
“This is the third year we have participated and last year when we went back, we looked at our strengths and weaknesses and worked towards how we could better our production.”
Titled “Lie Reward”, the storyline bases itself on the realities facing the younger generation and how peer pressure leads youths to commit crimes and have regretful consequences.
“Every second news in the media is about rape cases, violence against women and other crimes,” Ms Rawaqa said.
“So we chose that theme because we wanted to advocate to teenagers the things that could happen when there is peer pressure and making wrong decisions and for them to make the right decision.”
Ms Rawaqa thanked the school administrators, the Department of Language, and parents for the continued support towards the film production.
“Preparations were really tough, especially we had Year 12 and Year 13 exam students taking part and for that I am grateful to the school for the support in balancing both,”
The Western Division-based school took earned $2000 and the Fijian Made Kula Film Trophy for their efforts.
