About 75 volunteers from a Tavua community chose to spend the last day of their Easter weekend conducting a clean-up drive.

They collected and filled about 300 bags of rubbish, most of which were materials that could be recycled.

Tavualevu Youth Group project officer, Timoci Tuivaga, said they were surprised with the good turn-out.

“We only had about 40 T-shirts with us, but the number of people who turned out for the clean-up campaign surprised us,” he said.

“This just shows us the amount of civic pride that’s in Tavualevu youths and we even had children take part in the campaign.”

Mr Tuivaga said it was a good day for people to bond because many youths brought along friends and family members to join the clean-up programme.

He said their area of focus was Tavualevu Village and Tavua Town.

“We have identified another area in Tavua that has been used as a dumping ground for several years,” Mr Tuivaga said.

“We would be seeking sponsorship for the activity because that will be on a larger scale.

“We will be submitting our proposal to the various business houses in Tavua to request for sponsorship of waste bins.

“We will be requesting for about eight waste bins and for them to be collected by either Tavua Town Council or Waste Recyclers Fiji.”

He thanked their sponsors, Bank South Pacific (BSP), Waste Recyclers Fiji, Tavua Hotel, Ajay Nand and Salote Bokini.
