With Tropical Cyclone Rae now out of the Fiji group, the Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a new warning as Tropical Depression 10F has been upgraded to a Tropical Cyclone, named Seru.

While the projected path of the cyclone indicates that it will not make direct landfall in Fiji, the Fiji Met has warned that a heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole of Fiji as of 8p.m. last night.

"Tropical Cyclone Rae [Category 2] is centred to the south of Fiji waters and is moving away from the group," Fiji Met stated.

Minor damage was recorded in Lakeba, Matuku, Cicia, Moala, and Vanuabalavu, with roofs partially torn off homes, farms destroyed, and floodwater entering villages. However, no major injuries or loss of life were reported.

"Meanwhile, an active trough of low pressure with cloud affects the group. Associated strong winds continue to impact parts of the country," Fiji Met added.

"For the Fiji group, occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms are expected over most places. Rain will clear from tomorrow.

"Persistent heavy rain may lead to flash flooding in lowlying and flood-prone areas, as well as severe riverine flooding in major rivers around Fiji."

Possible impacts:

  • Localised flooding of susceptible communities, businesses, and low-lying areas.
  • Localised flooding of minor roads, Irish crossings, and bridges, with some disruption to traffic flow.
  • Severe flooding of major rivers, which could inundate towns and properties.
  • Poor visibility for motorists and mariners.
