Teacher Says Was Robbed On Rewa St

School teacher Asish Prasad says he was robbed just outside the main gate of Jai Narayan College in Rewa Street, Suva, on Monday.

This happened around 4pm.

According to Mr Prasad, he offered to do the crossing duties as his colleague on duty was pregnant.

“Most of the students had left by that time. The Police had also left. I was standing across the road from the main gate. There was a young man who I saw come near me,” he said.

“I acknowledged him with a nod and thought he had walked past me. I did not realise that he was standing behind me.

“The man grabbed me from the back. He tried to reach for my pockets but was unsuccessful. He managed to take the gold bracelet I was wearing and then ran off.”

Mr Prasad said this was not the first time such an incident had happened near the school. He said that another teacher had been robbed similarly and students had also been targeted.

The school had just installed surveillance cameras on the main gate. The whole incident was captured.

Mr Prasad said he lodged a Police complaint with Samabula Police Station. Police spokesperson Savaira Tabua confirmed that the investigation was continuing.

School principal Rajendra Kumar and  committee president Mehboob Raza were asked about on the security provided at the school. Mr Raza said the incident happened on the street and not within school premises. Questions sent to the Ministry of Education on the incident had not received a response when this edition went to press.
