If ever the phrase ‘give someone an inch and they’ll take a mile’ was to be used in a positive context, a primary school teacher’s act has served it justice.
Amelia Katia’s one mile walk to deliver worksheets to one of her students in the highlands of Sabeto in Nadi, went viral on TikTok thanks to her cousin.
The 29-year-old who teaches Year Three at Sabeto District School learnt that one of her students had moved further into the interior.

Teacher background
Ms Katia, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Primary Education from Fulton Adventist University College last year said it’s time teachers walk that extra mile to keep their students on par with their curriculum.
“I came to know that one of my students are staying up the mountain (farm) that had not collected his worksheet for over a month since their relocation away from the village,” she said.
“No matter if there is a mountain or to cross a broad river, it’s time for us to reach out and show them that we do care for them.
Ms Katia said she never dreamt had she would do this one day and there was joy when they met the student and his dad near river.
“My heart melted when my student approached me.
“I miss my students so much.
“For me as a first-year teacher.
“I faced difficulties and challenges in terms of preparing worksheets with limited resources, but I never stopped believing in myself and whenever I am stuck, I just prayed, God showed me what to do,” said Ms Katia.
She thanked the Ministry of Education and parents for their continued support of the children learning.
