The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) analyses the challenges and showcase inspiring practices to attract, retain and motivate teachers and educators.

As many observed World Teachers Day yesterday, FTU general secretary Muniappa Goundar said teaching was a dignified and valued profession.

The theme for this year is ‘Teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage.’

“The theme put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and then starting to increase that number at the top of the global agenda,” Mr Goundar said.

“It is a special day for the appreciation of teachers and includes celebrations to honour them for their special contributions.”

He said teachers faced many challenges.

“With support from parents, administrators and fellow teachers, educators overcome these obstacles and continue shaping the next generation,” he said.

“Teachers are the light of the world, the beacon in the dark and the hope that gives strength to survive.”

He said teachers were the gifted souls who worked every day to make sure the future was bright for students.
