Teachers Given Deadline to Register with Authority

“The act is very clear as Clause 10 explicitly stipulates that no person shall be permitted to teach at a school in Fiji unless the person is the holder of a Certificate of Registration.”

Ninety-four teachers who have not renewed their Teacher Registration or Licence to teach in Fiji since December 31, 2022 are given until December 8, 2023 to do so.

The Fiji Teachers Registration Authority (FTRA) chief executive officer Sangeeta Singh said failing to do this would give no option to the authority, but to de-register them.

“We have reminded these teachers on numerous occasions (weekly reminder) yet they have failed to renew their teacher registration and they are continuing to teach in the classrooms. This is a serious breach of the FTRA Act 2008,” Ms Singh said.

“The act is very clear as Clause 10 explicitly stipulates that no person shall be permitted to teach at a school in Fiji unless the person is the holder of a Certificate of Registration.”

She added that non-renewal of teacher registration simply means that the Fiji Teachers Registration Board through the provision of Clause 44 of the Act has the powers to remove the teacher’s name from the teachers’ register, de-registering and making him or her ineligible to teach with immediate effect.

FTRA is requesting the heads of schools to have a quick check and send any teacher with expired registration in their schools for renewals with immediate effect to avoid being de-registered.

Late Renewal Requirements:

1. Completed renewal form

2. Police clearance with no adverse record

3. Medical report

4. Late penalty for renewal - $30

5. Applicable fee for renewal of registration.
