For the first time applicants for teaching positions in the country are undergoing a written test.

All tests will be sat at the same time at different venues around the country to fill 298 positions because of retirement, teachers’ demise and study leave, which will become vacant by the end of the year.

This is a change from the previous job tests, which used to be a series of multiple-choice questions.

The Ministry of Education is ensuring that the most capable teachers are appointed to schools.

Furthermore, 115 heads of secondary schools are acting in the roles and the positions have been advertised. Applicants will undergo a written test, followed by an interview.

The ministry has already conducted written tests for teachers vying to fill the 66 early childhood education (ECE) positions and the 90 special education positions.

There are 75 primary school teachers, 67 secondary school teachers, 66 ECE teachers, 90 Special Education teachers and 115 heads of secondary schools’ positions to be filled through job tests and interview process.

The primary and secondary school applicants will sit their test on November 11; the heads of schools on November 19.

Minister Premila Kumar said the interviews would be done in December.

“Once the written test and interview process is over, the teachers will be placed in the order of merit and a pool will be created to fill the current vacant positions,” she said.

Year 12 and 13 students start school on Monday.

The ministry is considering an early start for all other students at the end of next month.

The other date in consideration is January 4, 2022.
