The working hours for teachers in primary and secondary schools will be reviewed.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro made the assurance in Labasa yesterday after concerns were raised about some heads of schools holding their teachers back until 4pm.

It was heard that teachers were held back after their designated working hours to attend meetings, hence some complained they couldn't do banking or reach home on time.

"We must review concerns as such to ensure our teachers enjoy their working environment, especially the restriction of allowing teachers going out of the school," Mr Radrodro said.

"They need to request their head of schools so that they can effectively and diligently work with other teachers because everyone needs a fair opportunity in terms of  attending to their personal duties."

"So this policy will be reviewed.

"We need to sit down with teacher stakeholders and unions to see how best we can address these issues," he added.

In 2023, a circular was given to all schools clearly stating the workings hours for teachers in primary and secondary schools are 8am to 3:30pm Monday to Thursday

and 8am to 3pm on Friday.

The policy was stipulated on the hours of work in the public service because teachers are civil servants.
