Wednesday 20 November 2024 | 03:30

Though he had never considered a military career, the opportunity stirred something within him.

Jone Mataturaga always dreamt of becoming a school teacher.

Growing up in Veinuqa Village, Namalata, Tailevu, teaching was a goal he held close to his heart.

Yet, life had other plans, nudging him towards an entirely unexpected journey.

One evening, while browsing online for opportunities, Jone stumbled upon a recruitment advertisement for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Though he had never considered a military career, the opportunity stirred something within him.

“I never imagined I’d take this route,” Mr Mataturaga said.

“But seeing that application felt like a sign to try something different. I knew it could be life-changing.”

Leaving the comfort of his village behind, Mr Mataturaga embarked on 18 months of intense training at the RFMF base in Nasinu.

The rigorous regimen tested him physically and mentally, far from the classroom life he had envisioned.

“The first few months were tough,” he admitted.

“I was inexperienced and found it challenging.

But as time passed, I began to appreciate the lessons- discipline, responsibility, and managing pressure.

“The military taught me leadership. I never thought I’d lead a team, but this experience made it possible.”

Training wasn’t just about endurance; it was a journey of growth.

Mr Mataturaga developed leadership skills, teamwork, and a deep sense of camaraderie with fellow soldiers.

“The bonds we built became a source of strength. It showed me the value of teamwork and unity.”

Reflecting on his transformation, Mr Mataturaga said: ‘I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. This path has been rewarding in ways I never imagined.

“Teaching remains a dream, but for now, I’m glad I ventured into the military to make a difference.”

Through his unexpected path, Mr Mataturaga has shown how embracing new challenges can lead to personal growth and a greater sense of purpose.
