Nehru Primary School teacher Salesi Drodrolagi believes teamwork is the reason the school received many awards at the Ministry for Local Government, Environment and Housing 2017 Clean School Programme in Suva on Thursday.

Mr Drodrolagi said the school had been part of the programme for four years and it had been one event that the school took seriously.

“We have an environment committee in school with students as environment officers. It is conducted at a class base, where students are being addressed by teachers to separate rubbish and labelling the different rubbish,” the Year Six teacher said.

“Students are being drilled and monitored to strictly follow the 3R rules which are reuse, reduce and recycle.

“We have to say that team effort from the management, teachers and students for the past four years have got us here.”

Minister for Local Government, Environment and Housing Parveen Bala encouraged the new incoming schools for this year’s programme to get on board with the Suva City Council (SCC) for the launching of the Suva Clean Schools programme 2018.

Mr Bala acknowledged all the other primary schools within the Suva City for adopting the initiative to implement Clean School Programme in their respective schools.

He said the SCC would invite all Suva-based secondary schools this year.

“Six primary schools were part of this programme when it was initiated in 2014 and expanded to include 27 primary schools through 2015 to 2017.

From this year 49 schools are in the clean schools programme,” Mr Kumar said.

“The programme is aimed at promoting environmental education and awareness, hoping to expand to the peri-urban schools from next year.”

The programme includes the popular 3R Rules that has been spread to other municipalities in Fiji, in support of the Department of Environment.
