The Ministry of Education is alarmed with statistics released by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services regarding the spike in teenage pregnancies over the past four years.

Education Permanent Secretary Selina Kuruleca is calling on stakeholders to collaborate with the ministry.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu said the statistics spoke for itself and it was an issue that must be addressed.

Ms Kuruleca said it was important to counsel teenage girls and boys about the consequences of their actions.

“It is important to empower girls and enlightening boys to respect our girls.

“The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education cannot do it alone and we need everyone to work together towards a common goal,” she said.

“We must empower our young people to make wise decisions and they need to know that every decision they make will either have a good or bad outcome. Parents must advise and direct their children.”
