'The Labasa Way': Sugarcane Field Birthday Surprise

While the nation observed Fiji Day the traditional way, Nanise Leba planned a birthday surprise for her father-in-law.
She called it ‘The Labasa Way’. Ms Leba surprised her father-in-law Maciu Namoce with the help of family members at the Sarava sugarcane field where Mr Namoce was cutting sugarcane yesterday morning.
Mr Namoce turned 65.

Ms Leba said they had pre-planned every detail of the surprise.
Mr Namoce was caught off-guard.
“"Yau i'da cala saraga, ka'i luluvu (I was so surprised and so emotional,” Mr Namoce said.
“While I celebrate my birthday, we also celebrated Fiji Day, it was a time for me to reflect and be thankful to the man above.
“I did not imagine that I’d be surprised in such a manner, in the sugarcane field.
“I couldn’t ask for a better Fiji Day than this.”
Ms Leba said they wanted to show him that while we celebrate Fiji Day, we also celebrate his life.
“It is always heartwarming to do such a thing, little gesture like this make you enjoy life,” Ms Leba said.
