Matelita Waqawai opened a savings account for her three year old daughter yesterday. Thanks to the Vanuabalavu Expo.

Her daughter Salote Kotobalavu was the youngest account holder to be registered with Unit Trust.

Opening a savings account has been a dreadful exercise for Mrs Waqawai as she had to wait until school breaks to travel to Suva.

“With irregular shipping services to Vanuabalavu, it has become more difficult for me to go to Suva and enquire about opening a savings account,” she said.

“The Expo made it easier for me to open an account.”

Mrs Waqawai has been a teacher for six years. She has been teaching in Vanuabalavu for the past three years. She said opening a savings account for her daughter would be useful in the future.

“I chose Unit Trust because it was easier for me to follow up with my daughter’s savings.”

“I am thankful to the Unit Trust team for being at the Expo as I am able to open my account as well.”

Unit Trust financial literacy officer Sera Rosa said it was important to bring key services to the maritime areas as savings was important.

“Through this expo, we get to realise that more awareness on the importance of savings need to be carried out in these maritime areas.”

The Vanuabalavu Expo ended yesterday with 12 participating companies.
