Josua Toganivalu, one of the three artists representing Fiji at the 13th Pacific Festival of Arts and Culture, expresses gratitude for the recognition of artists in Fiji.

The self-taught artist reflects on the initial challenge of gaining support from his own people.

“It was a big challenge, but slowly our Government and the people are recognising our different art forms,” Mr Toganivalu said.

“We are very grateful to the Fiji Government, Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Heritage and Arts, and Fiji Arts Council for supporting us and showcasing our work here.

“This is my first time participating in FestPac. It’s both exciting and humbling to be here. There’s so much to learn from other artists and to appreciate our art.”

He connects to his cultural traditions through earth colours and grid compositions while maintaining contemporary relevance through his illustrated motifs.

“I am happy to be reconnecting with other Pacific artists. I have brought five pieces of art with me,” Mr Toganivalu said.

“Our theme for the displayed artworks is our culture and regenerating Oceania. So, we included images that tell the story of regenerating Oceania in our pieces.”

Over the past two decades, Mr Toganivalu’s works had been collected by institutions and private collectors in Fiji and increasingly worldwide. He has exhibited across the Oceania region.

“This has been a 25-year journey. It wasn’t easy, but it required a lot of consistency, faith, and trusting the process.”
