The medical community in Fiji is mourning the loss of Dr Moape Bavou, a distinguished consultant obstetrician and senior gynecologist at Colonial War Memorial Hospital on Tuesday in Suva.

Dr Bavou’s untimely passing is a significant loss to both the Minister for Health and Medical Services and the broader Fijian community.

Penioni Ravunawa, Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, reflected on his personal connection with Dr Bavou, noting that they have been companions since their early days at Nabouwalu Hospital, where his parents worked alongside Ravunawa.

“He will be sorely missed,” Mr Ravunawa said while offering his condolences to the family during this difficult time.

The Katalyst Foundation (KF), which Dr Bavou supported throughout his career, also extended its heartfelt condolences. Recognised for his exceptional skills in treating gynecological cancers, KF paid tribute to his lasting impact on both the medical field and the lives of many women in Fiji.

“Dr Bavou’s legacy of compassionate care will continue to inspire for years to come,” the Foundation stated.

Fiji Cancer Society echoed similar sentiments, expressing deep sorrow over Dr Bavou’s passing.

The society described his death as a “profound loss” and thanked him for his invaluable contributions to the cancer community.

His passing leaves a void in the fight against cancer, but his work and the lives he impacted will ensure that his influence endures for generations.

Dr Bavou’s death marks the loss of a true champion for women’s health in Fiji.
