After scoring 381 out of 400 in her Fiji Year 13 Certificate Examination, Xavier College’s Monita Priyanka Singh aims to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

Despite the Xavier College’s prizegiving yet to take place, Monita said she started considering other programme options as well. This is because she believes there was no sponsorship offered by the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS) for the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.

“We are facing a bit of hardship now because there’s no scholarship for MBBS, but I have received a National Toppers Scholarship Scheme scholarship for mechanical engineering,” she said.

The 18-year-old Rarawai, Ba resident scooped the overall top scorer after achieving 88 in English, 100 in Mathematics, 94 in Physics and 99 in Chemistry.

“It was difficult because of COVID, but then we had teachers’ support and they were there for us. My toughest subject would be physics, but I managed to pull through,” she said.

She said her ability to top the school’s Fiji Year 11 Certificate Examination with a mark of 381 out of 400 was due to her parents’ advice and daily encouragement.

“I dedicate my achievement to my parents because they worked hard for me, my mother stays home and my father works at the Sugar Research Institute in Ba as a field man and they were happy for me,” she said.

“My motivation was my parents because they worked really hard for me that’s why I want to do something for them and I want to do an MBBS, but if I don’t get it then I’ll do Mechanical Engineering at USP, Laucala.”

She urged her junior colleagues at Xavier College to work hard if they wished to also score top marks.

Her proud mother Praneeta Charan said she was happy with her daughter’s achievement and would support her in whichever course she would choose to pursue.
